Since many people take photos on their smartphones these days, it's no surprise that there are tons of apps that let you manipulate and rearrange photos. There are also many apps that create photo collages, like Pic Stitch, Fuzel and Flipagram.
Regardless, I was pretty excited to hear about the release of the Layout app by Instagram. As a fan of Instagram's Hyperlapse app, I was anxious to try it out. It's really easy to use and produces collages with crisp, clean edges with no white lines in between. It allows you to flip and mirror photos easily to get interesting effects.
Here's how to get started with the Layout app.
Step 1 - Select photo from your camera roll and choose a layout
The faces option will attempt to do facial recognition on your photos and allow you to select pictures from the results. You can also take a photo using the photo booth option.
Step 2 - Edit the collage
You can replace, mirror or flip the photos. You can also pinch apart to zoom or move the photo around. In this example, I chose to flip the bottom image of my puppy so it looks like he has two heads--which at times is true.
Step 3 - Post directly to Instagram or Facebook
What good does a 4-headed puppy photo do you if you can't share? The Layout app makes it easy to share to Facebook and Instagram. If you select 'More' you'll get other sharing options.
You want to see more pictures of the puppy? With the Layout app, you can create many interesting layouts in minutes.
There is one drawback in this simple app. It doesn't allow you to apply filters in the app, so make sure you've applied filters before selecting the photo for the collage.
Other than that, I'm a fan of the Layout app! It seems like a great way to make clean, crisp and interesting collages.
